Things Fall Apart - Chinua AchebeMy dad gave me this book on my 18th birthday. When my uncle saw, he smiled and started reciting the title’s poem. I realised then that I was holding onto something special. The story tells the life of Okonkwo, a local wrestling champion in the fictional Nigerian village of Umuofia. I have returned to this novel many times since and often send it as a gift to friends. Simple and poetic, the writing fills you with both pride and pain as you learn of a history, a family and the devastating effects of colonialism.

Set in Nigeria.
