The Long Song - Andrea LevyMy grandparents grew up in Jamaica and moved to England in the 1950s. I read The Long Song, set in Jamaica during the final years of slavery and the early years of freedom, when I visited the country with my entire family last year. I loved the novel, but was most touched by the final pages. Andrea Levy reflects on why she wrote the book. She was sitting in a conference on slavery when a woman stood up and asked, “How could she be proud of her Jamaican roots…when her ancestors had all been slaves?” Struck by this question, Levy wrote this novel in response. She imagined the unforgettable story of July, in order to persuade this woman to have pride in her rich and brave ancestry.

Set in Jamaica.
