The Famished Road - Ben OkriI don’t know why The Famished Road by Ben Okri takes me back to the time when, as a seven year old walking the streets of Lagos at night, I slipped and fell up to my waste in sewage in an open drain! But it does. In a good way. The novel never once mentions Lagos, it is set in an unnamed African ghetto, but it is such a powerful narrative that I just float back to the time I spent there every time I read it. The Famished Road won’t appeal to everyone but I get lost in it. I can smell Africa as I read it. I drift along with the story, from the very first lines: “In the beginning there was a river. The river became a road and the road branched out to the whole world. And because the road was once a river it was always hungry.”

Set in Africa.
