sozaboy - ken saro-wira“It is the story of a child soldier, set during the Biafran War. It’s amazing in documenting the brutality of the war. Showing you the perspective of somebody who has to do really cruel things to survive. But there are moments that are really funny as well! What is brilliant about it is that it’s written in the vernacular of the time. It’s a bit like A Clockwork Orange, if you are not Nigerian! If you have a Nigerian parent, you’re like yep – I know what they’re saying! It really gives you a sense of a very working-class boy and his life. I feel that, a lot of the time, we don’t get that perspective. I absolutely love this book.”

Set in late-1960s Nigeria.
