56-205399-19194I stumbled across Palace Walk on a bookshelf at home, around the time of the 2014 Egyptian Presidential Elections. El-Sisi soon replaced Morsi who had replaced Mubarak, with the changes driven largely by mass popular protest. Despite the novel being set almost a century ago, the parallels between recent events and the atmosphere of Mahfouz’s Cairo, simmering under British occupation in the wake of WWI, were striking. A compelling and moving family saga, Palace Walk traces the fates of five children straining against the bonds imposed by their ostensibly pious father, at a time when the country itself yearned for independence.

Set in Cairo, Egypt.
