I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone. It is the intertwined accounts of two women bound together by a discourse and dictatorship set in Latin America’s Southern Cone. This text not only sheds light on the oppressive situation in the region but is also intent on exposing the silenced sufferances of the mothers, daughters and lovers in particular. In an amazing display of defiance, Traba uses literary device to voice – rather than disguise – her damning opinion of political oppression.
The women meet in Montevideo, Uruguay, but the book also covers events in early 1970s Argentina and Chile.
