I read this book back in 2008 in Hong Kong – it was recommended by my Chinese teacher in secondary school. Eileen Chang was one of the few most famous and influential Chinese female writers in the 20th century. This book is set in Shanghai and Hong Kong, at around the time of the Fall of Hong Kong in World War II – the “Fallen City” in the title refers exactly to Hong Kong. The four novellas in the book reveal the lives of Chinese women in the intermediary era between the old traditional and the new contemporary. The book implicitly describes the lack of freedom, limited choices and social constraints suffered by women at that time.
Set in early 1940s Hong Kong and Shanghai, China.
