joss and gold“I cried reading this book. It talks about Malay-Chinese relations, post May 13 1969. May 13 is something that we don’t talk about. There was a racial riot and the government swept it under the rug. The novel highlights a Chinese woman’s relationship with a white guy, a Peace Corps member. I did Masculine Studies at university, so I was interested in why the Chinese man couldn’t “capture” her. Because he felt emasculated? I was also interested in the idea of conception in the midst of destruction – she had her first intercourse with him on May 13, the date of the riots. The book deals with the idealisation of the white male and the oriental body really well.”
