81ofGCtRWcLI think it’s often the case that our favourite books are the ones we don’t pick for ourselves. I was given this when I was at school, during a blind book swap organised by my library club. It is the story of Judith Earle, a privileged young woman who goes to the all-female Girton College, Cambridge, in the period between the World Wars. The writing is personal, expansive and often indulgent. But it evokes a sense of Cambridge as a sort of unreal place even when you are in it; and this sense of repressing my own disbelief is one that would stay with me for my three years there.

Set in Cambridge, England.
