“When I was at uni, some of my favourite Brazilian books were by Machado de Assis, who was one of the first black writers of acclaim in Brazil. Dom Casmurro was my favourite novel, but he did a collection of short stories too which is great. Dom Casmurro is like a vignette of old Rio during the 19th century. I live in the areas in which it’s set – the old neighbourhoods of Santa Terea, Lapa and Gloria – so it was nice to see the characters around the old architecture I would see everyday.”
Set in 19th century Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
