I was walking through Book Culture, a cosy bookstore in Upper Manhattan, when I spotted the latest novel by Helen Oyeyemi. I recognised her name because I read her first novel – The Icarus Girl – when I was a teenager. I liked the bright green cover with a snake, rat and rose twisted together in a spiral. Set between New York and Massachusetts, USA, this is Snow White re-imagined through race in 1950s America. Snow is the beautiful pale half-sister of Bird, who exposes secrets through her dark skin. This is a Snow White which addresses race-relations in America, questions of beauty, insanity and family. Objects come alive, reflections disappear. It’s incredible.
Set in 1950s Massachusetts and New York City, USA.
