This was visceral. Excruciating, at times. It might have hit me particularly hard, as an athlete, but it’s much more than a book about sport – let alone about swimming. It’s an intense psychological study of a young man wrestling with class, race, sexuality, and failure in contemporary Australia. It gets to the heart of what’s important, and asks how you value a life. More than worth the effort.
Set primarily in Melbourne, Australia.
