I came across Abeng in a search for books about Jamaica, written by Jamaicans. In just 176 pages, Cliff tells a story of race, spirituality and sexuality through the story of a young Jamaican girl, Clare Savage. Set in 1950s Jamaica, Abeng is more a piece of revisionist literature than a novel, exploring the impacts of British colonialism in a way that your History teacher never could.
“You’re white because you’re a Savage.”
“But Mother is colored. Isn’t she?”
“If she is colored and you are white, doesn’t that make me colored?”
“No you are my daughter. You’re white.”
Set in 1950s Jamaica.
