51LrdsAh0tL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_Reading this while sheltering from a storm in our Barcelona Airbnb is one of my fondest memories. A peasant girl moves to Beijing, “the least romantic place in the whole universe”, in an attempt to grasp some of the “shiny things” for herself. Both an acute observation of modern China – with its Maoist doctrine and American-style consumption – and an apparently irreverent tale of a young person trying to make their way in the world. Which particularly resonated with me, as I watched the rain rattle Barcelona’s rooftops only days after my final university exams, wondering what the future might hold.

Set in Beijing, China.
